Close encounters with the elephant kind…

On the road to Udawalawe. The road from Thanmalwilla bordering the wildlife park. (Thanmalwilla is an inevitable stop for me to procure the freshest spliff in the world). Please note my bravado was for the electric fence that separated us from each other. Sadly the elephants have been forced to co-exist with human kind. The justification being wildlife conservation.
Sugar cane fields surround the wildlife park. At night the more intelligent animals drag trees on to the electric fence and break through to feed in the sugar cane fields. Sporadically a safari tracker or driver is killed by getting too close to the animals.
On a positive, elephants thrive in this park and a sustainable breeding program flourishes.
